A Moment of Tea is an Australian tea shop specialising in Chinese loose leaf tea, sourced directly from tea-growing provinces across China. Our collection spans white, green, oolong, black and pu-erh teas, each selected by our founder Joanne, who has trained at Lian Yu Tea School since 2014 and visits tea regions each year to source from farmers she knows.
Where our teas come from
China's tea-growing regions stretch across a wide band of the country's south and southwest. The coastal provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang are known for green tea, white tea and oolong. Inland, Yunnan's older tea forests in the southwest produce pu-erh and black tea. Guangdong, Anhui and Guangxi each contribute specific ingredients that appear in blended teas. In Taiwan, the oolong tradition grew from Fujian cultivars brought across the strait in the 19th century. Our range draws from all of these areas.
Fujian supplies the largest part of our range. Our Silver Needles and White Peony come from Fuding, where the coastal climate produces exceptional white tea. From the Wuyi Mountains, we source Big Red Robe Oolong and both styles of Lapsang Souchong, the birthplace of black tea. Fujian also provides the jasmine flowers used in our Jasmine Dragon Pearls, which are scented over a Yunnan green tea base.
Yunnan is home to ancient tea trees and our pu-erh collection. Our Raw Pu-erh Ancient Single Tree and Yunnan Black Tea (Dian Hong) both come from the Xigui area in Lincang, known for teas with a clear floral sweetness.
Zhejiang gives us Dragon Well (Long Jing), a hand-pressed green tea from the West Lake area near Hangzhou. From Guangdong, we source Aged Chen Pi from Xinhui, a citrus peel used in brewing and cooking. Our Osmanthus Green Tea blends Maofeng green tea from Anhui with osmanthus flowers from Guangxi.
Taiwan's high-altitude terrain suits oolong particularly well. Our Alishan High Mountain Oolong comes from above 1,000m in the Alishan range, where cool mist and slow growth give the leaves a buttery, floral character. Dong Ding Oolong is a medium-roasted style from Nantou County with a creamy sweetness that holds up well across multiple steeps.
How Joanne selects our teas
Every tea here goes through hands-on tasting before it makes the cut. Joanne looks for clean processing, balanced flavour across multiple steeps, and hui gan, that lingering sweetness that stays after you swallow.
