Blooming flower tea

Blooming tea (also called flowering tea) is tea that's been hand-tied into a ball shape. When you drop it into hot water, it slowly unfurls to reveal a flower arrangement — lily, rose, jasmine, chrysanthemum, or carnation, depending on the variety. The whole process takes about 3 minutes, and it's worth watching.

These come from a Chinese tradition of combining tea craft with visual artistry. Each ball is tied by hand, which is why the bloom looks intentional rather than random. They've become popular as gifts and for entertaining because people tend to stop and watch the opening happen.

Our blooming tea range

We carry individual tea balls and gift sets, with both caffeine-free and tea-leaf varieties:

Individual Blooming Flower Tea ($7 each) — Choose from pure flower blossoms (caffeine-free) or flowers combined with green or black tea. A good way to try one before committing to a set.

Blooming Flower Tea Gift Box ($36 for 6) — Three pure blossoms and three tea-with-flower varieties in a gift box. Works for birthdays, Christmas, or Secret Santa.

Blooming Flower Tea Hamper ($90) — Includes blooming teas, a glass teapot, and accessories. The most complete blooming tea gift we offer.

Tips

Use a glass teapot or tall glass — the visual experience is the point. We sell a 700ml glass teapot ($75) designed for blooming teas, but any clear vessel works.

Water temperature matters. Use 90°C (not boiling) for the best bloom and flavour. Each ball can be re-steeped 2-3 times.

You can try blooming tea in person at our Salamanca Tea Bar in Hobart. If you enjoy floral teas more broadly, have a look at our Flower Tea Collection for loose-leaf options like jasmine, osmanthus, and rose.
