Lapsang souchong floral

Lapsang Souchong Floral is a non-smoked black tea from Tongmu Village in the Wuyi Mountains, Fujian province, China. It's made in the same region as the famous smoked Lapsang Souchong, but the leaves aren't dried over pinewood fires — so instead of smoke, you get the tea's natural floral and fruity character.

The flavour is quite different from what most people expect when they hear "Lapsang Souchong." It's light, sweet, with honey and stone fruit notes, and a clean finish. If you've only tried the smoked version and found it too intense, the floral style is worth a go — it's a completely different experience.

Comparing the two side by side is something we recommend. Our Lapsang Souchong Original Smoked is bold and campfire-like, while this floral version is gentle and bright. Same origin, same tea plant variety, but the processing makes all the difference.

Brewing guide

Western style: Use 2g per 250ml with 90°C water. Steep 3 minutes. Good for 2 infusions.

Gongfu style: Use 5g per 150ml gaiwan or teapot. Pre-warm the vessel. Brew with 90°C water, 20 seconds for the first infusion, adding 10 seconds from the second. You can get 5–6 infusions, and the honey sweetness really develops in the middle brews.

About Lapsang Souchong

Lapsang Souchong (正山小种) comes from the Tongmu area of Fujian province, which is considered the birthplace of black tea. The traditional smoked version was one of the first black teas ever produced. Today, the non-smoked "floral" style has become popular in China for its delicate sweetness. We carry both versions so you can explore the full range — check our black tea collection for the complete lineup.

Joanne's tip

I find this tea surprises people who think all Lapsang Souchong tastes like a bonfire. It's actually one of our more approachable black teas — sweet and easy to brew without bitterness. If you're buying a gift for someone who likes lighter teas but you want to introduce them to something with a bit more depth, the floral Lapsang is a good bridge between green tea and full-bodied black tea.
