Traditional Uses and Active Compounds

  • Digestive tradition — In Chinese herbal practice, chen pi is taken after heavy meals to help with bloating and post-meal discomfort. Studies on citrus peel flavonoids have explored their effects on gastric motility.
  • Respiratory tradition — Traditionally used to help ease coughs and clear phlegm, often combined with ginger or honey. Research on nobiletin and tangeretin has examined their anti-inflammatory activity.
  • Rich in flavonoids — Contains naturally occurring polymethoxyflavones (hesperidin, nobiletin, tangeretin) that concentrate through the ageing process. These compounds are studied for their antioxidant properties.
  • Used in TCM for qi regulation — In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chen pi is classified as a warming ingredient associated with gentle digestive and respiratory support.
  • Calming evening ritual — Many drinkers reach for chen pi as part of a slow afternoon or after-dinner unwinding routine.

Traditional herbal uses are not intended as medical claims. If you're pregnant, on medication, or managing a health condition, check with your GP before introducing a new herbal tisane.

Why Xinhui Chen Pi Is Considered Exceptional

  • Unique growing environment — Xinhui's coastal climate and alluvial soil produce mandarin peel with a distinctive aromatic profile not found in other regions.
  • Traditional craftsmanship — Carefully selected, sun-dried, and aged using methods passed down through generations.
  • 9 years of natural ageing — Transforms the flavour from sharp and bitter to sweet and complex, while concentrating natural flavonoid content.
  • Geographical indication certified — Recognised as a geographical indication (GI) product, distinguishing Xinhui peel from mandarin grown elsewhere.

What Makes Aged Chen Pi Valued More

As chen pi ages, it transforms in a few measurable ways:

  • Bitter compounds mellow into a sweet, complex flavour
  • Natural flavonoid content (hesperidin, nobiletin, tangeretin) becomes more concentrated
  • The traditional saying goes: "one-year chen pi is a treasure, three-year chen pi is priceless" — ours has aged for 9 years

Brewing Instructions

Use 1/3 piece for 200-400ml teapot. Brew with boiling water and steep for 3 minutes. May be infused up to 3 times.
