The Carving Bamboo is a 200ml Yixing teapot made from authentic purple clay (zisha), with detailed bamboo carvings across the body. At 200ml, it's slightly larger than the traditional gongfu size — enough for 4-5 small cups per steep, which makes it handy if you're sharing tea with one or two people.

Product details

  • Capacity: 200ml
  • Clay type: Yixing purple clay (zisha)
  • Craftsmanship: Hand-carved bamboo detailing
  • Origin: Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China

Yixing teapots absorb the flavour of whatever tea you brew in them. After months of use with the same tea, the clay seasons and the teapot starts contributing to the flavour — even plain hot water poured through a well-used Yixing pot will carry a hint of the tea it's been brewing.

This works well for

  • Gongfu brewing of rock oolongs, roasted oolongs, or puerh
  • Sharing tea with a friend — the 200ml size is comfortable for two
  • Collectors and experienced tea drinkers looking for a display-worthy piece

Joanne's tip

The 200ml size is what I reach for when we have friends over for tea at home. It pours a comfortable amount for two or three people without needing to refill the kettle constantly. I'd pair this with a bold tea — something like Big Red Robe or a ripe puerh that can match the character of the pot.

Seasoning your new Yixing teapot

Before first use, season the teapot to open the clay's pores:

  1. Rinse with warm water — lid, spout, and body
  2. Submerge in a pot of water (place a cloth underneath) and simmer for 30-60 minutes
  3. Brew a strong batch of the tea you'll dedicate this pot to
  4. Fill the teapot with the brewed tea and soak for at least 24 hours
  5. Rinse with warm water and air dry

Never use soap on unglazed clay. Simply rinse with hot water after each session. Over time, the surface develops a gentle sheen as the clay absorbs tea oils.
