Rock clay flower and fish teapot, 200ml

This flower and fish teapot is a 200 ml stoneware teapot in the pear-shaped siting form, made from the rusty brown Dehua clay known as rock clay, with a few small goldfish and blossoms in gold and silver on the body. It has a round ball knob on the lid, a long curved spout and a loop handle.

Siting, si ting hu in Chinese, is one of the classic Yixing teapot shapes: a tall pear body on a narrow foot that pours in a long, controlled stream. Here it is made in rock clay rather than Yixing clay. Rock clay is coarse and mineral-heavy, fires to a speckled surface and holds heat well, so the pot stays warm through a gongfu session. A small ball-shaped clay strainer sits inside the spout to hold back leaf, and there is an air hole in the lid.

Like the matching cup, it suits darker teas: roasted oolong, black tea and ripe pu-erh. The teapot is sold on its own; the stand shown in some photos is not included.
