Rock clay flower and fish tea cup, 60ml

This flower and fish cup is a 60 ml stoneware tea cup in a rusty brown clay the Dehua potters call rock clay, with a few small goldfish and blossoms in gold and silver on the outside. It flares out at the rim and stands on a narrow foot ring, which gives it a tall, light look for its size.

Rock clay, lao yan ni in Chinese, is a coarse, mineral-heavy clay that fires to a speckled, slightly rough surface. The fish and flowers are small and spaced out, so the cup reads mostly as plain clay with a detail you notice when you turn it.

It suits darker teas: roasted oolong, black tea and ripe pu-erh all look right in it.
