Raw pu-erh ancient single tree cake 200g

This raw pu erh tea cake is pressed from the same ancient single tree leaves as our popular 30g tin version, sourced from Xigui in Yunnan Province. The 200g cake format is made for those who already know they love this tea and want enough to age at home or drink regularly over months and years.

What you'll taste

If you've tried the 30g tin, you know what to expect. There's that same bright citrus note upfront, followed by an uplifting quality that's hard to describe but easy to feel. The sweet aftertaste lingers and develops as you go through multiple infusions. This tea comes from trees that have grown undisturbed for centuries in the high-altitude environment around Xigui, and the leaf quality shows in every steep.

What changes with the cake format is convenience and ageing potential. A pressed cake stores more efficiently and continues to develop in flavour over the years. Raw pu erh naturally mellows and gains complexity with time, so this cake will taste different — and likely better — five or ten years from now.

Brewing guide

Break off a piece from the edge of the cake using a pu erh knife or letter opener. Be gentle to keep the leaves as whole as possible.

Western brewing

Use 1g per 250ml with 90-100°C water. Steep for 3 minutes. Good for up to 4 infusions.

Gongfu brewing

Use 6g per 150ml gaiwan or teapot. Pre-warm the vessel. Brew with boiling water. Steep 10 seconds for the first 5 infusions, adding 10 seconds from the sixth onward. Up to 15 infusions.

Joanne's note

I sourced this from the same ancient trees in Xigui that produce our 30g loose leaf version. If you've tried the smaller tin and want to keep this tea in your regular rotation, the cake is the way to go. I'd suggest trying the 30g tin first if you haven't yet — it's a good way to confirm this is your kind of tea before committing to a full cake.
