This travel gaiwan set is a one-person tea kit: a 120 ml porcelain gaiwan, an 80 ml cup, and a lined purple brocade pouch to carry them in. The gaiwan and cup are cream porcelain with a hand-painted purple swirl and a scatter of small dots, made in Dehua, Fujian.

The gaiwan is the lidded bowl you brew in, and the cup nests inside it so the whole set stacks into the pouch. The pouch is a deep purple fabric with gold flecks, a dark lining, a carry strap and a single bead toggle to close it. Everything you need to brew loose leaf tea at a desk, in a hotel room or on a campsite, as long as you have hot water.

The swirl is brushed on by hand, so no two pieces have it in the same place. The set in the photo is a guide, not an exact match.

Using a gaiwan

Put 3 to 5 g of leaf in the bowl, pour hot water, rest the lid slightly off centre and pour through the gap into your cup. Short steeps, repeated. If you have not used one before, come and try it at the Tea Bar and we will show you.

Care

Rinse with hot water before first use. Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth. The painted pattern sits under the glaze, so it will not scratch off in normal use, but we would still keep it out of the dishwasher and microwave.
