Hand-painted bamboo travel tea set

One pot, two cups — Dehua white porcelain

The Hand-Painted Bamboo Travel Tea Set is a Chinese tea set made from Dehua white porcelain, designed to be compact enough for travel. It includes a brewing cup with a built-in ceramic strainer and lid, two matching tea cups, a brocade carry bag, and a tea cloth. The cups nest inside the brewing cup, so the whole set packs down to about the size of a small water bottle.

Each piece is decorated with bamboo leaves using underglaze hand-painting, a technique where the design is applied before the glaze is fired. This means the pattern sits beneath the surface and won't fade or wear off with use. Because each set is painted by hand, the brushwork varies slightly from piece to piece.

Dehua, in Fujian province, has been producing white porcelain for over a thousand years. The clay fires to a clean, bright white that works well for lighter teas where you want to see the colour of the brew clearly. At around 300g for the full set, it's light enough to toss in a daypack or suitcase without thinking too much about it.

In Chinese culture, bamboo is one of the Four Gentlemen (四君子) alongside plum blossom, orchid, and chrysanthemum. It's associated with resilience and integrity. As a motif on teaware, it's understated and suits everyday use without feeling overly decorative.

Care and storage

Hand wash with warm water after each use. Avoid soap or detergent if you can, as porcelain can absorb residual fragrance over time. The set is dishwasher safe on the top rack, but not suitable for the microwave. Store everything back in the brocade bag between uses to prevent chips during transport.

Shipping

We ship from Hobart, Tasmania. Each set is wrapped and packed carefully to arrive safely. Standard and express shipping available Australia-wide.
