Stone double frog spitting tea pet

Yixing clay tea pet with water-spitting feature — $28

A spitting tea pet is a small handmade clay figure that shoots arcs of water when you pour hot tea over it. This one has two frogs sitting on a smooth stone base, made from Yixing purple clay. The spitting happens through thermal expansion — the clay heats and forces out water that was absorbed during a cold soak. Between pours, the frogs work like any other tea pet: they absorb the tea and slowly change colour over months of use.

In Chinese culture, frogs represent prosperity and good luck. Paired tea pets like this one are sometimes given as gifts for couples or placed on tea trays to add a bit of playfulness to a session. The water arcs are a conversation starter, especially if you're sharing tea with someone who hasn't seen one before.

How to activate the spitting

Rinse the tea pet with hot water first, then submerge it in cool water for 5–10 minutes. Take it out and pour hot tea over the frogs — you should see them spit water upward. The bigger the temperature difference, the better the arcs.

Heads up: about 95% of spitting tea pets work as expected. Occasionally one won't spit — it still works as a regular tea pet for daily feeding and colour transformation.

Joanne's tip

I keep one of these on our Tea Bar counter and it always gets questions. People pick it up, ask how it works, and before they know it we're talking about gongfu tea. If you're buying this as a gift, pair it with a packet of Big Red Robe oolong — it's a good "starter" tea for feeding, and the dark liquor shows the colour change quickly.
