Chrysanthemum hand-painted porcelain teapot, 150ml

This chrysanthemum teapot is a small porcelain teapot for one or two people, with a 150 ml body and a single green chrysanthemum painted by hand under a pale celadon glaze. It is made in Dehua, the porcelain town in Fujian, from high white porcelain, the kind that fires thin and bright.

The pattern is a nod to the Nishijin chrysanthemum motifs you see on Japanese textiles, painted in soft greens with a touch of orange at the centre of each flower. Because the colour is applied under the glaze, it has a slight depth to it and will not wear with use. The lid has a flower-shaped knob glazed in a deeper green, and the rim of the pot is gently scalloped to match.

At 150 ml it holds about two small cups, which is the size we reach for most at home when brewing green or white tea gongfu style. The body is light in the hand and the spout pours cleanly. The matching cup is listed separately.

Care

Rinse with hot water before first use. Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth. The painted pattern sits under the glaze, so it will not scratch off in normal use, but we would still keep it out of the dishwasher and microwave.
