Black clay gourd teapot with gold flecks, 150ml

This gourd teapot is a 150 ml stoneware teapot in matte black clay, shaped like a bottle gourd with a pinched waist, and finished with a handful of gold flecks applied over the surface. It is made in Dehua, Fujian. The lid has a small stem knob, the spout is short and upturned, and the handle is a round loop.

Sa jin, scattered gold, is an old decorating technique where gold is dabbed onto the clay in irregular patches. On this pot there are four or five patches on the body plus one each on the knob, spout tip and handle, and they sit differently on every pot. The black glaze is slightly rough and matte, with a warm brown tone where the clay shows at the rim.

At 150 ml it is a gongfu size, two or three small cups per pour. The matching black clay stand is listed separately, and the two sit well together.
