Walnut incense stick holder

This incense holder is a small round dish turned from a single piece of walnut, 7 cm across and 1.8 cm tall, with a low cone in the centre and a small hole at the top, edged with a gold-coloured metal ring, for a stick of incense. The dish itself catches the ash, so there is nothing else to set up.

The hole is about 3 mm, which takes the usual thin incense sticks of 1 to 2.5 mm. The underside is sanded smooth and finished with a wood oil. Walnut varies a lot from board to board, so some holders are a deep chocolate brown and others lighter with more visible grain; we cannot pick a shade to order.

A stick of incense is a quiet way to start a tea session, and this is the simplest holder we have found for it.
