Wa no Sencha is a Japanese green tea, the everyday drinking tea that many people in Japan reach for. Unlike gyokuro, which is shade-grown, sencha is grown in full sunlight, giving it a brighter, more refreshing character with grassy and slightly sweet notes.

How does it taste

Bright and vegetal with a slightly sweet, refreshing finish. More grassy and lively than Chinese green teas, but less intense than gyokuro. Clean and easy to brew, this is the everyday Japanese green tea.

Tea profile

  • Taste: Bright, vegetal, slightly sweet, refreshing
  • Type: Japanese green tea (steamed)
  • Origin: Japan
  • Net weight: 40g
  • Caffeine: High

Brewing instructions

Western brewing:
Use 2g of tea per 250ml teapot. Water at 80°C. Steep for 2 minutes. Good for 2 infusions.

Japanese style (recommended):
Use 5g per 200ml teapot. Pre-warm the vessel. Water at 70-75°C. Steep 60 seconds for the first infusion. Second infusion: pour out almost immediately — the leaves have already opened. Third infusion: slightly hotter water, 45 seconds.

Joanne's notes

If you've tried our Gyokuro and loved the Japanese green tea style but want something for everyday, sencha is the next step. It's more affordable and forgiving with water temperature. Available at our Salamanca Tea Bar in Hobart.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. For longer storage, keep in the fridge in a sealed bag.
