This black cat cup and saucer set is a handleless ceramic cup with a matching saucer, glazed matte black with a cream cat drawn on each piece: a cat curled up asleep on the cup, a cat's face looking up from the saucer. It comes in two sizes. The small set is a 40 ml cup on an 8 cm saucer, the size of a gongfu tasting cup. The large set is a 120 ml cup on a 12 cm saucer, closer to a Japanese teacup or a short flat white.

The black glaze is soft and matte, not shiny, and the saucer has a ribbed cream rim that shows the clay underneath. The cup foot is left in the same cream. Against a white table it reads as a small dark shape with a pale cat on it, which is most of the charm.

The large one is a good size for oolong or black tea brewed in a pot. The small one suits a gongfu session where the pot is refilled often and the cups are emptied in two sips.

Care

Hand wash. Matte glaze can pick up tea stains over time; a soft cloth and warm water brings it back. Small specks and slight size variation are normal for hand-finished ware.
