The Little Mouse Tea Pet is a Duanni clay figure modelled after Boh from Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away — the scene where the baby transforms into a round little mouse. It's a tea companion you place on your tea tray and "feed" with leftover tea during each gongfu session. Over time, the porous clay absorbs the tea and deepens in colour, developing a smooth patina. At 7cm tall and 126g, it's more substantial than our smaller tea pets.

Mouse tea pets in Chinese culture represent cleverness and abundance. This one works both as a functional tea companion and as a display piece for Ghibli fans — it's recognisable enough that people tend to spot the reference.

Product details

  • Material: Duanni clay from Yixing (Jiangsu Province, China)
  • Size: 7cm high × 5.1cm wide × 5cm long
  • Weight: Approximately 126g
  • Colour: Natural sandy brown (Duanni has a lighter starting colour than standard purple clay)

Handmade — slight variations are normal.

This works well for

  • Studio Ghibli fans who also drink tea
  • A gift for someone who'd appreciate the Spirited Away reference
  • People who prefer a more substantial tea pet (126g, feels solid)
  • Display on a desk or shelf, even without a tea tray

Joanne's tip

The Duanni clay starts lighter than our other tea pets, so the colour journey is more visible — you go from sandy brown toward deeper amber. Feed it with Dong Ding oolong if you want a warm golden tone, or pu-erh for something richer and darker. This one gets the most "oh, is that Boh?" reactions at the shop.

How to care for your tea pet

Pour leftover tea over it each session. Let it air-dry on the tray afterwards. Don't use soap — the unglazed clay absorbs whatever you put on it. Read our tea pet guide for feeding tips and colour development advice.
