What it does

A gongdao cup, or cha hai, is the pitcher that sits between the brewing vessel and the drinking cups. Brew in your gaiwan, empty it into this, then share it out. Everyone at the table gets tea of the same strength, and the leaves stop steeping the moment the gaiwan is empty. Once you've brewed with one, going back to pouring straight from the gaiwan feels clumsy.

The cup

300 ml of clear, hand-blown borosilicate glass, shaped like a rounded bulb that narrows toward the base. The spout is drawn out long and pointed, a shape the makers call an eagle beak, so the pour is precise and stops without a drip. The handle is a curl of solid coloured glass, wide at the top where your finger sits and tapering out at the tail.

Two handle colours. White is an opaque milky glass, like white jade. Pink is a pale translucent pink. The body is the same clear glass in both.

The glass is rated for a sudden change from -20°C to 150°C, so boiling tea straight from the gaiwan is no problem.

Care

Hand wash and air dry. The narrow spout collects tea film over time; a thin brush or a soak in warm water with a spoon of bicarb clears it. Don't take it from the fridge to boiling water.

Hand-blown glass carries small marks of the process: a tiny bubble here, a faint ripple there, and small differences in size and in the exact shade of the handle. The pink in particular reads lighter or deeper depending on the light behind it.
