The Glass Gongdao Cup with Jade Handle is a 300 ml hand-blown borosilicate pitcher for sharing tea out between the gaiwan and the cups. The handle comes in White, an opaque milky glass like white jade, or Pink, a pale translucent pink. Both sit on the same clear body, so the handle is the only solid colour on a see-through cup.

Pouring is where this cup earns its place. The spout is drawn out long and pointed, a shape the makers call an eagle beak, so the stream stays narrow and stops without a drip. The body is a rounded bulb that narrows toward the base, and the handle is a curl of solid coloured glass, wide at the top where your finger sits and tapering out at the tail. The colour also shows your hand where to grip when the cup is full of dark tea.

The glass takes a sudden change from -20°C to 150°C, so tea straight off the boil is fine. We like watching the liquor change colour between infusions through the clear body.

Using a gongdao cup

Pour the whole infusion from the gaiwan into the gongdao cup in one go, then share it out between the cups. Each cup gets tea of the same strength, and the leaves stop steeping the moment the gaiwan is empty.

Care

Hand wash and air dry. A thin brush or a warm bicarb soak clears tea film from the spout. Don't take it from the fridge to boiling water. Hand-blown glass shows small marks of the process, and the handle shade varies a little between pieces.
