What it's for

This is the sharing pitcher for gongfu tea. The teapot or gaiwan empties into it, and from here the tea goes into the small cups. Two things happen: every cup gets the same strength, and the leaves stop steeping as soon as the pot is empty. In Chinese it's a gongdao bei, the fairness cup, and the name says what it's for.

The cup

Around 300 ml, hand-blown and hand-shaped in borosilicate glass. The body is an egg shape sitting on a thick disc of solid glass with a dimple underneath. That weight is the first thing you notice when you pick it up. It sits low and stable, and it doesn't skate across the tea table when you set it down.

The spout is a short beak with a clean cut-off. The handle is a ribbon of coloured glass, joined at the shoulder and flaring out at the bottom. Two colours: Green, a deep solid green, and Rainbow, three strands of yellow, blue and green twisted together.

Care

Hand wash, air dry. It takes boiling tea without complaint, but avoid sudden cold-to-hot shocks. Glass doesn't absorb flavour, so one pitcher does for every tea you own.

Every piece is blown and shaped by hand. Sizes are approximate, and the twist of colour in the Rainbow handle falls differently on each one. You'll get one close to the photos, not identical.
