Chinese tea culture offers a different take on orange tea: teas that get their citrus character from real mandarin peels — aged, whole, or blended — rather than artificial flavouring.
The real difference you can taste
When customers ask me about orange tea, they're often thinking of supermarket-style flavoured tea bags. Traditional natural citrus teas work differently. The scent is gentler and more subtle, but when you drink them, the flavour lingers. Aged mandarin peel can bring sweet, aromatic, honey-like notes with a slight citrus bitterness that keeps the cup balanced.
These aren't teas with added orange flavouring. They're traditional preparations where mandarin peel and tea have been paired for generations in Chinese tea culture.

Why natural citrus matters
Real complexity: Natural mandarin peels develop layers of flavour as they age — sweet, aromatic, sometimes floral, with gentle bitter notes that create balance.
Traditional after-meal use: Aged citrus peel is often used in Chinese tea and food culture after rich meals. We frame it as a traditional tea habit, not a medical claim.
Multiple infusions: Unlike flavoured tea bags that lose their punch after one brewing, natural mandarin peel teas reward multiple steeps as the fruit slowly releases its complexity.
Three ways to experience natural citrus tea
| Tea | What it is | Taste | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chen Pi (Aged Mandarin Peel) | 9-year aged dried mandarin peels | Sweet, aromatic, honey-like | Caffeine-free evening cups, traditional after-meal tea routines |
| Mandarin Pu-erh | Whole dried mandarin filled with ripe pu-erh | Rich, earthy, brightened by citrus | Substantial afternoon tea, pu-erh newcomers |
| Rose Mandarin White | White tea blend with aged peel and rose | Light, floral, gentle citrus | Delicate flavours, special occasions |
Chen Pi — pure citrus tradition

Aged mandarin peel from Xinhui in Guangdong — 9 years of natural ageing transform sharp fresh peel into something sweet and complex. It's 100% citrus — no tea leaves at all — making it naturally caffeine-free.
You can brew it traditionally, add pieces to a thermos flask with hot water and sip throughout the day, or simmer it gently. The aged peel develops honey-like sweetness with warm, aromatic citrus notes.
Mandarin Pu-erh — citrus with ripe pu-erh

Chinese craftsmanship at its most detailed. Tea makers hollow out small Xinhui mandarins, fill them with ripe pu-erh, then dry the entire fruit. You brew the whole piece — citrus peel and tea together.
The citrus balances pu-erh's earthiness, which makes this an approachable introduction for newcomers to pu-erh. One piece of our Mandarin Pu-erh gives you multiple brews as the mandarin slowly releases its natural sweetness.
Rose Mandarin White — the lighter option

Our own blend combines delicate aged white tea with mandarin peel and rose petals. Three elements work together — rose for floral notes, mandarin for brightness, white tea as a gentle carrier.
This Rose Mandarin White blend is the most delicate introduction to citrus teas, good when you want something gentle rather than bold.
